Information About Residential Treatment Centers For Children

What Are Residential Treatment Centers?

A residential treatment center is a type of facility that provides therapy to people who are suffering from a mental illness, behavior problem or substance abuse. It is sometimes referred to as rehab. Many people are placed in a residential treatment facility after all other methods have been exhausted.

Residential Treatment Centers for Children

The number of children being placed in residential treatment centers has increased drastically since the 1990s. Children who have conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, attention deficit disorder, substance abuse problems and educational problems are often placed in a residential treatment facility. The method and structure of a residential treatment center can vary. Additionally, there are locked down and unlocked treatment facilities.

Locked-down residential treatment facilities do not allow a person to leave the premises. People who stay in one of these facilities are usually confined to one room. Those who stay in unlocked treatment facilities have more freedom, but they cannot leave the facility unless certain criteria are met.

Residential treatment centers usually focus on behavior modification and giving children who have serious issues the treatment that they need. These treatment centers are typically made up of psychiatrists, social workers and psychologists.

The Effectiveness of Residential Treatment Centers

Residential treatment centers have become a subject of controversy. However, these treatment centers have been shown to be very effective at modifying bad behavior and putting teens on the right track. There was a study done in 2010 that showed that troubled teens who spend time in a residential treatment center are 21 percent less likely to commit a crime. They are also 40 percent less likely to be hospitalized for a mental health problem.

There was another study that was done in 2011 that confirmed that residential treatment centers can help teens who suffer from mental problems. The study found that the teenagers noticed a significant reduction in symptom severity 12-18 months after they left the treatment facility. Their symptoms continued to improve over the course of 36-40 months.
